Comment now on the latest news at the Forum KICKING OUT Colts respond to Belfast loss Houston suffered their first home defeat of the season with the visit of league leaders Belfast to The Stables. Six up in the first four, the Colts would fall behind in the top flight clash by the end of heat ten, A 5-1 from second string Tabor Andos (9) and Sarkis Devin (9+1) earning the visitors the lead for the first time in a fixture they would go on to win by two. Andos—who was back at Houston for the first time since making a £1/4million switch to Belfast in pre-season—went on to make it three wins out of three on the night two heats later, victories for Jan Tomanek (10+2) in heat 13 and then Devin a race later ensured Paul Hunt’s side would lead heading into the last. The minor places from Stephan Beck (12) and Tomanek in the decider saw Belfast through to their third away win of the campaign from four meetings, it also their third successive league win at the venue. They couldn’t add another in their later Division One Cup clash however, with Blake White (15) scoring a maximum when Belfast made a return to The Stables two days later for the group qualifier. The victory, secured by the end of heat 13, ensures George Seymour’s side a place in the semi-finals for the fourth successive season, Belfast need to win big against Balham in their remaining qualifier to stand any chance of going through. Houston’s week certainly ended much better than in started, with the Colts going on to win at Hallamshire 39-51 in the league, prolific reserve Sebes Makos paid for 12 in what was the Colts biggest away win in nearly six years, the 18 year old Hungarian winning heat two before finishing second in heat four, eight and 14 5-1’s, the latter with Maris Zizilev securing both league points. TODAY: Shorts Bradford have still yet to be beaten in the league since their relegation last season and have now extended their advantage at the top of division two to three points. There will be some frustration though for boss Dave Robinson, with his side held to a draw for the third away league meeting in a row when they paid a visit to Stirling’s Shore Road, a stadium they won at by four last season. They needed a last heat 5-1 from Jeppe Hildebrandt (14) and Ross Nicholls (14+1) to earn their latest away league point, four heats earlier Nicholls had beaten Joseph Goldwire on the first of three occasions in the final five races of the meeting when in as a tactical substitute. Bradford also needed a last heat 5-1—this time from Scott Read (11) and Hildebrandt (13+1)—to secure a 46-44 win over Harringay and keep their unbeaten start to the campaign intact. Stirling responded to their first dropped point at home of SL17 by beating bottom side Buxton on their travels, 41-49, reserve Risto Pelto (10+1) in heat 12 and 14 5-1’s which secured victory in that one for the Seahawks with a race to spare. Buxton have yet to win at home this season, they did however break their away duck, Martin Harvey’s side beating Stoke on their travels, 44-46, thanks in part to two wins from 19 year old second string Sam Thomas (8). Elsewhere in division two Wavendon’s top five each raced to a least one heat win and a total of nine between them as their side won at Chesterfield, 42-48, a last heat 5-1 from Michael Berkeley (12+1) and Daniel Williams (12+2) securing the points which would help them end the week amongst a group of four clubs who sit second to Bradford on ten league points. All six of last years Grand Prix riders to get their SL17 World Championship campaigns underway this week have safely made it through to round two. Current World number seven Jan Tomanek (13) topped the standings at Chesterfield by a point from fellow SL17 GP series rider Ethan Robertson, the success was the tenth in a WSO meeting for the Belfast SL13 and 15 World Champion. World numbers three and ten, Stephan Beck (11) and Simon Snow (10), finished well inside the top eight to safely make it through, Snow one of six Brits to do so over the course of this weeks meetings. World Number four Julian Harrison (11) was the pick of the home nation riders in the Pori tie, he finishing third on the podium after losing out in a race-off to Ivanov Sergey, home rider Sven Roth won the meeting with a 15 point maximum.
A double bonus point clinching 56-34 home win over Chesterfield has sent Harringay through to the semi-finals of the Division Two Cup. All four of the trophies won by the Hoods in their 13 year club history have come at the third tier level. Meanwhile a draw at Dudley has left Nottingham top of their Division Three Cup group and in a strong position to qualify for the knock out stage, they have a home meeting to come against Heath, who currently lie second in the section.
A run of five straight losses in the league has seen Heath slip from the promotion places in division three to the bottom of the table. The Spitfires lost for the second time at home in SL17 this week, they going down 44-46 to Matt Akers’ Barnsley after conceding a last heat 5-1 to top visiting pairing, Vadim Kozel (13+1) and Jan Vogel (12+2).
